Just a few highlights…
Sally Lightfoot Crabs
Found throughout the rocky shores of the Galapagos Islands. This brightly coloured crab lives among and on the rocks just above the water line. Young Sally Lightfoot crabs are black or dark brown; this provides excellent camouflage among the black lava rocks of the Galapagos Islands. When the crabs mature they turn a more vibrant shade of red and orange.
Blue-Footed Booby
Perhaps the most recognisable bird in the Galapagos due to its signature startling blue feet. They’re not unique to the Galapagos, but native to subtropical and tropical regions of the Pacific Ocean. Scientific research suggests that the healthier the male, the stronger the blue of its feet.
Sea Lions
Consider them your welcoming committee to the Galapagos Islands! Often spotted snoozing on sandy beaches, climbing up rocky outcroppings, or zooming effortlessly about underwater. Their playful nature and graceful agility in the water are put on display when they show up to join visitors for a swim or snorkel.
Marine Iguanas
Spending much of their lives doing what we’d all like to be doing – sunbathing on the islands’ dark rocky shores. These are the only true marine or sea-going iguanas in the world. They dive into the ocean to feed on algae and can stay underwater for up to forty-five minutes. Sometimes at low tide they can be seen chomping on green algae growing on rocks close to shore.
Giant Tortoises
One of the most famous and unique animals of the Galapagos! They are one of the largest living species of tortoise in the world and the official symbol of the islands. The Galapagos Islands were named after the giant tortoise; the old Spanish word galapago means tortoise. Averaging more than four feet in length and weighing in excess of 500 pounds, the life span of these gentle giants can be more than 100 year
