Cruise to… The Norwegian Fjords

Cruise to… The Norwegian Fjords

If there’s one thing you’ll take away from the Norwegian Fjords, it’s the breath-taking scenery that will make you feel refreshed.

The best way to experience Norway is by cruise, with the majority sailing roundtrip from Southampton for 7 nights. You’ll typically enjoy 3 or 4 ports in this stunning part of the world.

The excitement gathers as the Fjords’ mountains beckon on the horizon… You’ll want to be early riser, after a relaxing day at sea, to witness the spectacle of sailing into the Fjords. It’s a sight you’ll never forget! From the awe-inspiring mountain peaks, and the pretty houses dotted on the coast (many only accessible via small boat!); to the sounds of crashing waterfalls as the spring snow-capped mountains melt away and spray down cliff sides – it’s truly a treat for the senses!

When To Visit?

Visiting Norway is an option all year round. Over the winter months, many cruise lines offer longer itineraries further up the Norway coast to give you chance to search for the Northern Lights, however very few will call into the fjords. In general, the Norwegian Fjords season runs from early spring – best time for snow-capped mountains – through to late September – a quieter time of year.

Top tip: June and July are by far our recommendation of time of year to visit – warm weather and opportunities for daylight in the evening – even on deck at midnight its still not dark!

Even if you’re not typically a cruiser, we think that sailing through the Norwegian Fjords should be on everyone’s bucket lists. For the best experience we recommend a balcony – imagine waking up and indulging in your breakfast on your balcony as you glide through the magical fjords…

We … Bergen!

Norway’s second largest city with a warren of tiny wooden buildings dotted around the harbour. The weather here can be unpredictable – it can rain an average of 260 days per year, but don’t let that put a dampener on your experience, just pack a brolly!

Start in the heart

Within 5-10 minutes you can be exploring this picture-postcard destination, with a plethora of gift shops in the harbour. Bergen is famed for its fish market, and it’s worth having a wander here to see (and smell!) the freshly caught catch of the day – ideal for a lunchtime snack!

History To Uncover

For culture vultures, Bergen offers an impressive collection of museums and galleries, where you can learn all about the 1000-year history of Bergen and Bryggen – home to a number of eighteenth and nineteenth century original buildings.

The Easy Way Up

One of the most popular attractions is the funicular mountainside railway, climbing 320 meters to Floyen, here you can access hiking paths and take in amazing views of the city down below. We recommend travelling up on the railway, and walking down at your leisure.

What else is there to see?

Norse Legends

We’d be amiss to talk about Norway without mentioning the Vikings! You’ll discover a rich history wherever you visit, but Haugesund is undoubtedly the true spiritual home of the mighty Vikings. For Gods, legends and a taste of Viking life head to Flam’s Viking village.

Worship Wonder

Stave Churches – A true symbol of Norway, the ornate churches, located in the most prettiest of villages, miles from anywhere. Enjoy the architecture and admire the unique craftmanship of the medieval carvings, some churches date back as long ago as 12th Century.

Take A Hike!

There is no better way to experience Norway’s true beauty than to don your hiking boots, head for the mountains and immerse yourself in nature! See the top of the snow-capped peaks, enjoy skiing or join a local guide who will show you the best vantage points.

A Warm Welcome

On a Norwegian Fjords cruise, you will visit small, remote, pretty villages – many of which have a population of under 500; so when a cruise ship visits it’s a fantastic spectacle! The locals will come out and wave their flags, welcoming you to their village.

Food Glorious Food

Taste Norway – Norway is famed for its fish and seafood – no trip is complete without sampling the local catch. But that’s not all they offer.
Maybe try something quirky… like the brown cheese, reindeer or their delicious potato dumplings!

Adventure Abounds!

Experience the best of the fjords from the water on an exciting RIB safari, or head off in a kayak! There’s adventure for everyone! From white water rafting to coasting down the mountains by bike, through hairpin bends, whilst soaking up spectacular views!
