Cruise to… Japan

Cruise to… Japan

Japan is possibly one of the most colourful places on the planet. A land of rich cultural history evolved into one of the leading forces behind technological advancements, whilst maintaining a deep respect for its spiritual foundations and principles.
The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics (held during Summer 2021) has renewed interest from prospective visitors to Japan’s islands. And, with so much diversity on offer, who can blame them!
Many cruises around the islands of Japan will begin in Tokyo, or the nearby port of Yokohama.
Princess Cruises are well known for their incredible itineraries featuring many of Japan’s festivals.

Known for...

Oh yes! Japan will by all means play on its stereotypical characters… from Geisha Girls to Sumo Wrestlers that are still so very current, to the infamous Samurai Warriors and Ninjas of days gone-by. But this is by no means all that Japan is. Step away from the dazzling neon lights of Tokyo, bustling night markets and the Anime cartoons; and you’ll discover a diverse land of vast mountain ranges, forests and waterfalls.

Local Flavour

It’s not all Sushi and Sake, so fussy eaters rejoice! Foodies will love Japan for its incredible range of flavours and local delicacies. As you’d expect from an island nation, they excel at seafood dishes, and also do a mighty fine noodle or two! Japan is not only home to the Wagyu cattle, but visit a good restaurant and you’ll find out that they know how to cook tofu (practically an art form!), and can even transform the humble ramen soup into a Michelin star worthy meal.
It’s all about the flavours… tantalise your taste buds with the heat of wasabi, the zestiness of Yuzu, the meatiness of the shitake mushroom, or the infusion of ginger. Take a visit to the urban markets to sample some of the best seasonal flavours for the area.
If rice wine isn’t your scene, then a visit to Japan isn’t complete until you’ve been to a tea ceremony – very popular in Kyoto!
And… don’t forget to come back with at least one random flavoured souvenir for friends and family back home… maybe a Matcha flavoured Kit Kat?

Of course, there are a great number of reasons to visit Japan, and iconic sights to see… here are just a few of our favourites!

Spring Blossom Season

Cherry blossom is one of Japan’s popular reasons for tourists visiting.
The kaledioscopic colours bloom from around mid-March to early May, depending on where you are (generally starts in the South, and the season moves North). Think Okinawa to Kagoshima to Osaka to Tokyo to Aomori to Sapporo.

Autumn Foliage Season

Just as spectacular as the cherry blossom, the autumn foliage creates a vibrant vista of red, orange and yellow across Japan’s forests. Tourism is quieter than in spring, yet the temperature is still warm.

Snow Monkeys

Snow Monkeys (or Japanese Macaques) have also become a popular attraction for visitors to Japan.
A full-day trip to Nagano and the Snow Monkey Park is certainly one to tick off on the bucket list!

Spectacular & Active

Can you really say you’ve been to Japan if you haven’t seen its most famous volcano and highest peak? Mount Fuji can be visited on a full-day trip from Tokyo (take the bullet train at least one way!), or on a cruise visiting the port of Shimizu.

Robot Shows

As one of the World’s leader in electronics and robotic technology, Japan sure knows how to put on a show!
Argentina has the Tango, Mallorca has Pirates!, London has the West End, and Japan… well… Japan has Robot Restaurant! Book your seat for an unforgettable evening of techno dance blended with Japanese culture.

Moments Of Quiet Worship

Think of Japan and undoubtedly you’ll see a hint of a Buddhist temple or Shinto shrine. They are literally everywhere across the country, and some are more famous than others; but all are beautiful, humbling and well worth a moment of your visiting time.
