Hurtigruten – Classic Round Voyage & Northern Lights
The Classic Round Voyage with Hurtigruten — a 12-day trip with 6 days spent above the Arctic Circle, providing you with the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights in their full majesty. This famed sailing with Hurtigruten is described by Lonely Planet as “The World’s Most Beautiful Voyage“, and is also very much loved by Jane McDonald.
Imagine it… you’re standing on deck. It’s dark. The night is crisp, but you’re wrapped in warm clothing, and someone hands you a steaming hot chocolate. Suddenly, a ghostly movement of green and violet light in the sky grabs your attention. It’s the Northern Lights!
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are an unrivalled natural phenomenon. Occurring most frequently in the inky winters within the Arctic Circle, the lights are a magical and moving experience that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.
Don't Want To Miss A Thing
Hurtigruten, also known as the ‘Post Ship’ and ‘Coastal Express’ has been sailing this coastline since its inaugural voyage in 1893 and offers daily departures from the UNESCO-listed port of Bergen. The 12-day Classic Round Voyage to Kirkenes and back hugs this iconic coastline and spends over half its duration directly beneath the Aurora Oval – the prime location for seeing the incredible natural wonder of the Northern Lights.
The drama of the scenery and the wildlife is simply breath-taking. Twenty-two of the ports lie north of the Arctic Circle – and you are given the opportunity to join excursions tailor-made to match your exploration level. Whatever you miss on the northbound sailing during the night, you are able to see in daylight on the southbound sailing.

Distinguished by its numerous spires, towers and highly-ornate buildings, Ålesund is a town renowned for its beautiful art nouveau architecture. It owes this to a devastating fire that burned a large proportion of the city to the ground in 1904. The entire town was subsequently rebuilt in the fashionable style of the time, art nouveau.
The island groups of Lofoten and Vesterålen offer some of the most stunning scenery you will see during the entire coastal voyage. The Lofoten region is renowned for its natural beauty with steep mountains, wild nature and small, picturesque fishing villages. The daylight sailing route through the Lofoten Islands is a highlight for many Hurtigruten guests.
Spending time in Kirkenes provides the opportunity to take part in numerous adventurous activities into the Arctic environment. For example, exploring the Arctic wilderness on a snowmobile and driving over a frozen fjord. During the trip, your guides tell you about the history of the region, the extreme Arctic climate and the area´s unique wildlife. On the dog-sledge adventures, huskies eagerly transport you across the frozen Arctic landscape.
The views from the ship!
As you sail along the Helgeland coast, you’ll pass hundreds of islets, fertile farmland and steep granite walls rich in local lore. On deck you can see the strange mountain Torghatten (rising 258 m above sea level), famous for its distinctive hole right through the middle. The hole is 160 m long, 35 m high and 20 m wide, and was created during the ice age.
